Ironclad moisturizing secrets to save ultra-sensitive skin that flares up every change of season
Whenever the change of seasons arrives and cold winds start blowing in the mornings and evenings, my skin invariably goes into a state of emergency.
Even skincare products I usually used without any issues suddenly started stinging, and the areas around my mouth and cheeks began to crack and turn white. It was so stressful that my skin barrier had broken down, leaving me in an ultra-sensitive state where even minor irritations caused me to easily turn red and itchy.
So, every year when the change of seasons comes around, I completely overhaul my vanity setup and defend my skin with my own strict moisturizing routine. The first thing I change is my cleanser; I avoid alkaline foam cleansers that leave my skin squeaky clean and strictly use only mild, slightly acidic cleansers.
I found that you need to gently wash away only the impurities while leaving the skin's natural sebum layer intact to prevent extreme tightness after washing your face.
And for the toner, instead of wiping it off with a cotton pad, I dispense a viscous, gel-like essence toner into my hands and gently press it into my skin to help with absorption. The cream I use most for this is Estra Atobarrier 365 Cream, which is famous as a dermatologist-recommended barrier cream. It has tiny white ceramide capsules embedded throughout, and when you roll it on, they gently melt with body heat and absorb completely.
It feels lighter than regular moisturizing cream yet locks in moisture, so it is a real lifesaver for strengthening the skin barrier during seasonal changes.
But that isn't all; I have one more special cheat code of my own: using the original Vaseline that's lying around the house.
After finishing my skincare routine at night, I put some Vaseline on a cotton swab and apply a very thin layer to the areas around my eyes, mouth, and nose where dryness is particularly severe. Leaving this thin film on my skin while I sleep perfectly blocks moisture from evaporating, keeping my skin hydrated until the next morning. At first, I was worried that it might clog my pores and cause breakouts, but I found that applying just a very small amount and spreading it thinly actually made my skin feel more comfortable. However, since the oiliness might not be completely removed with just water in the morning, I wash it off by gently rolling a gel cleanser over my face.
Since switching to this routine, I have been freed from the flaky skin and stinging I used to suffer from every change of season, so I am less stressed these days.
