My skin looks so dull lately, so I'm hesitant about using a face mask.

I took a selfie with a friend at a cafe a few days ago, and I was shocked because my skin looked so dry and rough, even with a filter. When I looked in the mirror, the unevenness stood out under the lighting, and it felt like there was absolutely no moisture left. So, I’m planning to start a proper home skincare routine, and the first thing I have a question about is the frequency of using face masks. In the past, I used to just put them on occasionally whenever I remembered, but now I want to manage my skin more systematically. I can't seem to decide on the routine because I'm worried that using them too often might irritate my skin. Although "one mask a day" is trending, I'm also concerned if it will work for my sensitive skin. I'm also curious if you manage your routines by separating the frequency of use depending on whether you use functional masks or regular hydrating masks. Please give me some advice on how you all structure your routines during periods of severe dryness like mine.
