[My Personal Skincare Method] Sharing a minimal routine to repair the skin barrier and combat breakouts during the change of seasons haha
My skin completely broke out after being exposed to the cold wind lately due to the unpredictable weather. I've always had internal dryness and tend to be a bit sensitive, but this time the redness was particularly severe, and right after washing my face, it felt so tight it was like it was tearing apart. Even when I applied the basic skincare products I usually use without any issues, they didn't absorb at all and felt greasy on the surface, so I instinctively knew my skin barrier had completely collapsed. So, I boldly stopped my usual complex skincare routine and switched to a minimalist approach focused solely on repairing the barrier. In just a week, my skin became strong and glowed, so I wanted to share some of my tips!
First of all, I completely changed my cleansing habits. I used to prefer double cleansing or mildly alkaline foam cleansers that leave my skin squeaky clean to remove makeup, but I realized that might actually be counterproductive, so I put them aside in the corner of the bathroom. Instead, I standardized my morning and evening cleansing routine using a very gentle, low-foaming gel-type mildly acidic cleanser. The key is to lather the cleanser sufficiently in your hands and then gently roll it over your face with minimal pressure, barely enough to touch your fingertips. I also made sure the water temperature was never hot, keeping it lukewarm. When drying my face after washing, I didn't rub with a towel but instead lightly patted it dry.
And wiping toners with pads is absolutely forbidden due to skin friction! Instead, I dispensed a slightly viscous, gel-like essence toner into my hand and gently patted it onto my face two or three times to help with absorption. The main product is a thick barrier cream packed with high concentrations of ceramide and panthenol; I scooped out about double the amount I usually use and applied it generously without holding back. At first, it felt a bit heavy and stuffy, but as time passed, it melted with body heat and absorbed completely, and I could definitely feel it creating a sturdy moisturizing protective barrier on the surface of my skin. During the day, I applied only the cream and finished with a mineral sunscreen, while at night, I layered a thin layer once more on my cheeks and around my mouth, where I felt particularly dry, using it like a sleeping mask.
I didn't apply any functional products at all, such as retinol, high-concentration Vitamin C ampoules, or exfoliants containing AHA and BHA. I truly focused solely on three things: hydration, soothing, and strengthening the skin barrier. Amazingly, the stinging sensation I experienced during my skincare routine subsided like magic starting on the third day, and the redness faded significantly. Now, a week later, my skin has almost fully returned to its former healthy state. If your skin texture suddenly becomes rough during the change of seasons and stings even when using your usual products, definitely reduce the number of products you use and try to get by for a few days on an ointment-like cream packed with ceramides. You will truly feel your skin becoming noticeably more comfortable. Haha. How is everyone managing their skin barrier in this kind of weather? If you have your own holy grail barrier products, please share them freely in the comments!
