Sharing my chaotic adaptation journey as a retinol beginner, the flower of anti-aging.
Hello everyone! I'm sure you all use at least one anti-aging product in your night care routine, right? Lately, I've noticed fine lines around my eyes and enlarged pores on my cheeks becoming much more noticeable, so I've finally embarked on the journey of 'retinol,' which is known as the king of anti-aging products. Haha. I heard that retinol is incredibly effective for wrinkle reduction and skin elasticity because it stimulates collagen production. However, since I've seen so many reviews mentioning severe side effects alongside such undeniable results, I was really scared even before I started. ㅠㅠ
I was told that I absolutely must start with a low concentration, so I bought a beginner's product containing 0.1%. Also, since retinol can be destroyed by UV rays and cause irritation, I kept the strict rule in mind that it must be applied only at night and added it exclusively to my night routine. The method I used is called the "sandwich technique." Because applying retinol directly to a bare face can be too irritating, I first apply a layer of my usual moisturizer, then squeeze out just half a pea-sized amount of retinol and spread it thinly over problem areas, and finally cover it with a moisturizing barrier cream.
For the first week, I only applied it every three days, and sure enough, I experienced that famous retinol detoxification reaction. Starting on the third day, white flakes of dead skin appeared around my mouth, my skin turned red, and it began to sting a little. I was told absolutely not to forcibly peel off the dead skin or scrub at this stage, so I endured it, applied a barrier cream twice as thick as usual, and went to sleep. This cycle of peeling and redness continued for about a week, until suddenly, a time came when my skin felt incredibly comfortable.
It has been exactly three months since I got used to retinol, and the results are absolutely fantastic! My skin texture has definitely become as smooth as a boiled egg, and foundation creasing around my nose has significantly decreased. The fine lines around my eyes also seem to have faded, so it has become a skincare item I will stick with for the rest of my life. However, you must keep in mind that you need to apply sunscreen very thoroughly during the day while using retinol! If anyone is hesitating due to concerns about side effects, I recommend trying a tiny amount mixed with a moisturizer to slowly get your skin used to it. There is a reward after the struggle!
