What are some effective procedures for treating melasma?

Lately, every time I look in the mirror, it feels like the dark spots on my face are getting darker, and it's so stressful.
I'm not sure if I didn't apply sunscreen properly, especially to my cheeks and the sides of my eyes, or if those areas are just particularly sensitive...
My skin tone looks dull because of the patchy dark spots, and it's so annoying that makeup can't cover them up!
So, I have been looking into various treatments for melasma. I have tried applying whitening cosmetics that are said to be good for melasma and mainly choosing Vitamin C products, but I haven't seen significant results.
