What is the best way to start treating melasma?

After removing my makeup, I notice brown stains around my cheekbones. At first, I thought I just had a few blemishes, but since they don't go away over time, it's bothering me. It looks fine when I cover it with makeup, but it catches my eye again when I see my bare face.

I searched for melasma treatments and found that there are many types of lasers available, and that people often combine them with toning or other procedures. However, it is difficult to even distinguish exactly whether something is melasma or just blemishes. Even if they look similar, I don't think I should judge on my own just because the treatment methods differ. Would it be best to get a diagnosis from a dermatologist first and choose a method that suits my skin condition? I’ve heard that melasma treatment is difficult to complete in just one or two sessions, so I’m wondering how long I should generally expect it to take. Since the cost would be a burden if I had to pay every time, I want to plan carefully from the start. I also want to know how meticulously I need to protect myself from UV rays during treatment. I’ve heard that the color can actually darken or reappear after the procedure. For those of you who have received treatment, how did you manage your skin afterward? It would be very helpful if you could tell me if you saw satisfactory results and what factors you considered important when choosing a clinic.
