My husband's melasma has gotten really dark. Will toning be very painful?

My husband has been playing golf outdoors every weekend, and now dark spots and blemishes have suddenly appeared on his cheekbones. I nagged him so much to wear sunscreen, but he wouldn't. I feel like he deserves it, but he also looks so much older, so I'm planning to take him to a dermatologist. I'm thinking of getting him a 10-session package for a laser treatment like Pico Toning, but my husband is such a crybaby, haha. How painful is the toning treatment?
