Is it possible to achieve a beautiful complexion even after applying sunscreen?

I always make sure to apply sunscreen before foundation to protect against UV rays. However, perhaps because of the sunscreen, my skin doesn't look pretty even after I apply foundation. It looks fine right when I first put it on, but after a few hours, it breaks down terribly, which is a real concern. I can't just skip it, though... Now that summer is here, my worries are getting worse. Does anyone have any great tips for applying makeup after using sunscreen?
