How are comedones and folliculitis distinguished during an acne and pore consultation?
Hello. I am a woman in my 30s concerned about acne and enlarged pores. While preparing for a consultation, I am writing to inquire whether all small bumps are the same as acne, or if conditions that look similar, such as folliculitis, need to be distinguished separately. I am not asking for a diagnosis based solely on the attached photos; rather, I would like to know what is checked during an actual examination.
Do comedones that look like millet grains, inflammatory acne, and bumps around hair follicles require a diagnosis based on itching, pain, location, and duration in addition to their appearance? I would also like to know the criteria for needing a medical consultation before squeezing them myself or using exfoliating products.
Please let me know if it is sufficient to prepare the date the bumps appeared and a list of products used for the first visit, and if magnified observation or other tests are performed as needed. Even if they look similar in photos, if the management methods may differ, what differences should I explain?
I would also like to know if I can consult about pore treatments first when bumps are present along with visible pores, and whether you check for inflammation first before discussing a treatment plan. Rather than deciding on a specific treatment in advance, I would like to receive guidance on a consultation sequence tailored to my current condition and actions to avoid at home.
