Laser hair removal pain... Is it bearable even for a coward?

I'm thinking of starting underarm hair removal in advance for summer, but does it hurt a lot? My friend says it just stings and is bearable, but I'm such a wimp that I'm already worried.

I was wondering if you apply anesthetic cream thoroughly before the procedure. How many sessions usually are needed for a smooth finish? I want to wear sleeveless tops confidently this summer, so I’m planning to get it done in advance.
