What causes freckles?

I'm upset because of the sudden increase in freckles these days. Is this all genetic?

I definitely didn't have any freckles when I was younger, but as I went through menopause, small spots started appearing on my face, and I started wondering what the cause of freckles was.

I'm not saying I don't pay attention to sun protection, but I'm not sure if it's because of hormonal changes or if there's another cause for freckles.

It's too stressful to simply dismiss it as a sign of aging, so I want to understand the exact cause of my freckles and begin taking appropriate measures. I'm curious to hear the experiences of those who, like me, have experienced more freckles as they age.
