Does hair really grow back slower after laser hair removal?

I'm considering laser hair removal before summer comes. How many sessions do I need to see noticeable results? I shave frequently, so my skin has become sensitive and I feel like I'm getting slight discoloration, which is really stressing me out. I'm also curious if it stings a lot during the treatment, and I'd like to know how the treatment schedule is usually set for underarms.
