What precautions should be taken for skin that retains redness for a long time after a procedure?

Perhaps because my skin is thin, redness tends to last a long time even from minor irritation.
Even when I had extractions done in the past, the red marks stayed longer than for other people, so since then I have become a little afraid to go to the dermatologist.
However, lately I've been concerned about my skin texture and breakouts, so I'd like to get treatments again. Would it be okay to start with treatments that have minimal downtime? I'm also curious about post-procedure care tips for those whose redness lasts a long time.
